I have been a bow hunter for over 40 years. I took my first deer in 1977 using a Bear recurve and cedar shafted arrows, hunting with my brother on public land that my grandfather used to hunt. After that first deer, I decided I needed to become a better shot (the shot I made was sheer luck), so I upgraded to a compound bow and joined an archery league. That evolved into not only shooting on several leagues, but taking part in running them as well. I currently help run 2 different leagues at Washtenaw Sportsmen’s Club which keeps me shooting most of the year, all in an effort to be a better hunter.
I’ve only been an active member of MBH since the 2015 rendezvous, but almost immediately answered the call to become the Awards Director. While bow hunting tends to be a solitary endeavor, there is a social aspect as well. Being recognized for the hunting successes we have is part of the experience of being a member of Michigan Bow Hunters.
