Past President - Sam Morello

My name is Sam Morello and I serve as the current Past President of the Michigan Bow Hunters Association. I have been bow hunting for twenty years or so, thirteen of which have been with a longbow and the remaining years with compound bows. I also hunt or have hunted deer with firearms and enjoy squirrel hunting. My wife Carole also shoots a longbow or recurve. We attend many archery shoots some large some small. Most people recognize our old vintage trailer at shoots throughout Michigan I am also a member of Land-O-Lakes Bowmen where I served on their board for 15 years, Michigan Longbow Association where I served on their board for four years, Pope & Young and MTB. I am drawn to this organization because of the people and the interest and dedication they have in archery, bow hunting and promotion of archery hunting throughout the state of Michigan. I have also served as a district Governor for MBH for eight years before becoming President. I have always been one to join up and volunteer time. I feel the more people that are involved in an activity the better the outcome will be for the group. I also act as a archery coach for Land O Lakes. This takes up quite a bit of my time but it is well worth the effort. The first time a child ‘gets it” is a great thing to see. At that time, I know we may have a lifetime archer.
Some of my other interests besides hunting, fishing and camping activities are classic English sports cars, pottery, sailing, and fly tying. I have not been doing pottery or fly tying in some time but still have my classic cars. We all have outside activities other than ‘the bow club’. These other interest make us a more rounded club where we can leverage the strengths of others.
My overall agenda for the MBH in my term as president is to modernize and update our policy and procedures so that the organization can do more with less effort. I feel is we standardize the tasks that we do as a routine, we will be more efficient at these tasks and be able to spend more time on philanthropy and promotion of archery hunting. Another goal is to ‘cross-train’ the board members on most of the activities within the day to day running of the club. These activities will help us in the long term to have a balanced board with extended knowledge in our procedures. MBH has a long history of active leadership in state game legislation, participation in ad hock committees, and representation with the MDNR. These activities will continue. Our club also is active in youth archery, we sponsor schools for NASP. With Legislative representation, youth archery, MBH activities like the triple-crown and Rendezvous, there’s plenty of work to be done so don’t be shy. There’s room for you within this organization!
