As you know, Attorney General Mike Cox is
fighting Illinois and the federal government in the U.S. Supreme Court to
force the closure of locks in Chicago waterways infested with Asian carp,
where we've been joined by New York, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ontario.
These invasive species could decimate our Great Lakes-based economy, valued
in the billions, by ruining the ecology of our lakes and rivers. Anyone who
has watched videos of Illinois rivers knows exactly what I am talking about.
Despite the clear evidence of an impending crisis, federal and state
authorities in charge of the locks refuse to close them and are fighting us
in court.
While we don't know what the outcome of the suit will be,
we can mobilize folks in order to send a message to the federal and local
authorities in charge that they must act now to protect Michigan and the
other Great Lakes states. Illinois accounts for only 63 of the 10,000 miles
of Great Lakes shoreline, yet today they control the fate of the entire
Great Lakes basin.
Attorney General Cox has created a website,
www.stopasiancarp.com, for
citizens to sign an online petition, the results of which will be used to
show Illinois and federal authorities that they must look at the needs of
the entire Great Lakes basin.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox Information on the Modified Bow
permit Law
We commend the
work towards and the passing of SB572 (modified bow permit bill) sponsored by
Senator Jim Barcia, which was signed into law on July 2, 2008. This law would
allow the NRC to facilitate the implementation of the Modified Bow Permit for
those who need such assistance. For information about modifying archery
equipment, please go to this link supplied by the North American Bowhunters
Coalition.
The Michigan Bow
Hunters Association Position Statement regarding proposed crossbow regulation
MBH supports the recommendations proposed to the Natural Resource
Commission at the July 10, 2008 NRC meeting, from the Crossbow Work Group to
refine the current process in crossbow application authorization and
eligibility, for physically challenged hunters. The Crossbow Workgroup
recommendations can be found at this link:

MBH Position Statement on One Buck
Tag Proposal!
"The Michigan Bow Hunters
Association and its membership support the current
combination deer tag system and oppose the proposed bag
limit of one antlered deer during the bow and arrow season
and one antlered deer during the firearms seasons for the UP
or the entire state.
The Michigan Bow Hunters Association believe that the
present two-buck tag and combo license system provides for
the greatest flexibility in the use of tags and maximum
opportunity for time afield for all deer hunters with
minimum impact on the deer resource. A regulation change to
one buck per season would have a negative impact on all deer
hunters by limiting time afield. We also feel that this
proposal will have the most affect on recreational
opportunity for those who hunt only with a bow or hunt only
with a gun. In addition we are not aware of any
biological reason for this change in deer hunting
regulations."
MBH Position Statement on
License Fee Proposal!
Below is the Michigan Bow
Hunters Association's official position statement as approved by the
Board of Governors on January 21, 2007:
"Michigan Bow Hunters Association recognizes the need for a
measured and equitable increase in licensing fees; however,
Michigan Bow Hunters Association does not support the license fee
increases as outlined in the Hunting & Fishing License
Package Development Work Group Final Report dated November
9, 2006."
