House Bill submitted to redesign the current
Crossbow Application process (HB 5741)
State Representative Joel Sheltrown introduced a House Bill interestingly
enough on February 14th (Valentines Day) in an attempt to not only reinvent
the criteria which would implement what physical disabilities would be
acceptable for a Physical Therapist to sign certification for an individual to
obtain a crossbow permit, this House Bill also would require the MDNR to issue
a crossbow permit to anyone the age of 69 and older upon request.
This bill is supported by State Representatives Howard Walker, Kevin
Elsenheimer, Neal Nitz, Goeff Hansen, Jeff Mayes, Richard Ball, Tim Melton,
Matthew Gillard, Gino Polidori, Darwin Booher, Tom Casperson, Philip LaJoy,
John Stakoe, David Law, Kenneth Horn, Dave Hildenbrand, Marty Knollenberg,
Bill Huizenga, Mike Simpson, Aldo Vagnozzi, Kathy Angerer, Richard LeBlanc,
Dudley Spade, Robert Jones, Martin Griffin, Gary McDowell, Michael Lahti,
Steven Lindberg, Rick Jones, John Stahl, Kate Ebli, Brian Calley, Daniel
Acciavatti, Phillip Pavlov, John Garfield, George Cushingberry, Fred Miller,
Ted Hammon, Richard Hammel, Fulton Sheen, Judy Emmons, Lee Gonzales, Joe Hune
and at the time of this writing sits in the Committee of Tourism, Outdoor
Recreation and Natural Resources.
MBH opposes this bill as written. It’s a clear effort to undermine the work
of a sub-committee formed by the NRC at the beginning of this year, to review
the current crossbow application process. This sub committee is working for a
more productive crossbow application process as well as ensuring that
individuals are also educated about the Modified Bow permit application and
products like the Draw Loc system, which enables an attachment to be added to
a bow to draw and lock the bowstring at full draw.
